Almanac Glossary
New to the Chinese almanac? These key concepts will help you understand the readings and tools across TongShuToday.
Day Officer (建除十二神)
One of twelve rotating energies that shape each day's character, determining which activities are favored or discouraged. The cycle repeats every twelve days.
Heavenly Stems (天干)
A cycle of ten elements — five pairs of Yin and Yang — that combine with Earthly Branches to form the sixty-day Stem-Branch calendar cycle used throughout Chinese metaphysics.
Earthly Branches (地支)
Twelve branches corresponding to the Chinese zodiac animals, forming half of the Stem-Branch dating system. Each branch carries an element, a season, and a direction.
Day Master (日主)
The Heavenly Stem of your birth day — your core elemental identity in Chinese metaphysics. It reveals your natural strengths, tendencies, and how you interact with the world.
BaZi (八字)
The "Four Pillars of Destiny" — your birth chart calculated from the year, month, day, and hour of birth. BaZi analysis provides a detailed map of personality, timing, and life phases.
Auspicious (吉)
Favorable energy — a day that supports the planned activity. An auspicious day is not a guarantee of success, but it means the day's character works with your intentions rather than against them.
Tong Shu (通書)
The traditional Chinese almanac, used for centuries to guide daily planning and date selection. It records the Stem-Branch cycle, Day Officers, and activity recommendations for every day of the year.
